Marcel Broodthaers

Marcel Broodthaers

Belgian poet, photographer, film-maker and artist Marcel Broodthaers was born in Brussels and began as a poet. By aged 16-17 he had some contacts with the Belgian Surrealists, especially Magritte, who gave him a copy of Mallarmé’s Un Coup de Dés. (Magritte’s paintings with words, in which there is a contradiction between the painted word and the painted object, were later a crucial influence on him). 1958 saw him publish articles illustrated with his own photographs and by the end of 1963 he had decided to become an artist and began to make objects.

He had his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie St Laurent, Brussels, 1964 where he exhibited everyday objects, words, lettering, child-like drawings often with verbal-visual puns. He also continued to make books, catalogues, prints on everything from canvases attached to the wall to reliefs in plastic and went on to make his first film in 1957, followed by a number of short films. Third Drawer Down Studio are pleased to present their Marcel Broodthaers collection, originally produced for MoMa New York.
